Milton, Georgia is located in the most northern part of Fulton County. An affluent community, Milton is named in honor of the former Milton County, which was named after Revolutionary War hero John Milton.
While the city of Milton is relatively young, it has already made a name for itself. In 2011, the Atlanta Business Chronicle recognized the City of Milton for having the highest quality of life in the state of Georgia and ninth-highest quality of life in the southern United States, according to an "On Numbers" survey.
On March 9, 2006, the bill creating the city of Milton passed the state house and senate. A few weeks later the governor signed the bill into law. In an overwhelming approval, 85 percent of voters said yes to the City of Milton referendum. In the years since, Milton has created its own model of governance using public-private partnerships to leverage cost savings while providing quality municipal services.
Milton has a population of more than 38,000 and covers 23,000 acres. It includes the northwest unincorporated island, bordered by Cherokee County to the north and west; Forsyth County to the east; Roswell city limits to the southwest (a little west of Arnold Mill Road); Alpharetta city limits to the south (roughly, Mayfield Road to Cogburn Road to Windward Parkway). The estimated median household income in 2015 was $60,291, whereas the state's was $51,244. The estimated median house or condo value in 2015 was $274,700.
Niche ranked Milton 6 of 110 Best Suburbs to Live in in Georgia. The site also ranked Milton number 6 for safety and on its list of best places to raise a family. Comparable communities are Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Roswell and Berkeley Lake.
Its schools belong to the Fulton County School System. The city is served by Fulton County Schools Elementary schools serving students in grades K-5 are Birmingham Falls, Cogburn Woods, Crabapple Crossing Elementary School, Summit Hill. Middle Schools include Hopewell Middle School and Northwestern Middle School. Milton High School and Cambridge High School serve students in grades 9-12.
