Dunwoody, Georgia is located in DeKalb County and is a northern suburb of Atlanta. The city is only about 10 miles away from Atlanta. Dunwoody was incorporated as a city fairly recently in 2008. As of 2015, the city has a population of 48,733, up from 46,267 in the 2010 Census.
The Dunwoody area was established in the early 1830s and named for Major Charles Dunwody. That extra "o" added comes from an incorrect spelling of his name on a banking note. One of Dunwoody's most historic buildings dates from 1829. The Ebenezer Primitive Baptist Church, at the corner of Roberts Drive and Spalding Drive, is home to one of the city's oldest cemeteries, where many of the founding fathers of Dunwoody are buried.
Despite being a rural haven, progress would come to the city. In 1971, the Spruill family sold a large portion of their property for the construction of Perimeter Mall. Dunwoody Village was finished that same year.
Its top employers include IHG – Intercontinental Hotel Group, Peachford Hospital, APEX Systems, Convergent Outsourcing, Macy’s #20, and CGS. Average commute times are about 30 minutes.
The DeKalb County School System provides education services to students living in Dunwoody. They include Austin Elementary School, Chesnut Charter Elementary School, Kingsley Elementary School, Vanderlyn Elementary School, Dunwoody Elementary School, Peachtree Charter Middle School and Dunwoody High School. Universities include Georgia State University, Dunwoody Campus and American InterContinental University (AIU Dunwoody).
Today, Dunwoody is a family-centered community where you can find adventure. There’s zip lining at Treetop Quest and the Dunwoody Nature Center's Butterfly Festival. The Dunwoody Nature Center is like an interactive playground in the open woods, hammocks and tree swings, a bubbling brook. It’s as close to a fairy-tale forest as you can get. Best of all, it's free. You’re still just minutes away from the all the great things to do in Atlanta, like the Georgia Aquarium and Zoo Atlanta. Dunwoody hosts two annual festivals — Apple Cider Days and Lemonade Days. The events have carnival rides, games and other family fun. See a show at Stage Door Players or browse an art exhibit at Spruill Center for the Arts.
If you love the outdoors then Dunwoody's beloved Brook Run Park is for you. Its dotted with playgrounds and crisscrossed with beautiful creeks, hiking paths and biking trails.
Shop Perimeter Mall, which boasts more than 1.5 million square feet of today's hottest stores and brands, offers some of the best shopping around Atlanta. Go beyond the mall in Dunwoody Village and Perimeter Place where you can shop specialty shops and boutiques.
