Cobb County, located on the northwest boundary of Atlanta, is a mostly suburban area that as of 2015 had a population of 741,334. This makes it Georgia's third-most populous county.
Cobb, along with several adjoining counties, was created in 1832 by the Georgia General Assembly. Cobb County was one of nine Georgia counties carved out of the disputed territory of the Cherokee Nation. The county is named for Judge Thomas Willis Cobb, who served as a U.S. senator, state representative, and superior court judge. Marietta, the county seat, was named for Judge Cobb's wife, Mary.
The county has earned a few notable distinctions. The U.S. Census Bureau ranks Cobb County as the most-educated in the state of Georgia and 12th among all counties in the United States. It has ranked among the top 100 wealthiest counties in the United States. Cobb was also recently ranked as the "Least Obese County" in Georgia.
Once a rural area, the county transitioned to a suburban area in the 60's and 70's. Today Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves play in Cumberland, an edge city in Cobb County. Attractions also include Six Flags Over Georgia and the Gone With the Wind Museum. Marietta Square offers eateries, shops and the Earl Smith Strand Theater where movies still play.
Top employers include Home Depot, the Cobb County School District, Lockheed Martin, Kennesaw State University, and Wellstar.
The Cobb County School District (CCSD) is the second largest school system in Georgia and the 23rd largest in the nation. It serves nearly 113,000 students with 112 schools, including 67 elementary schools, 25 middle schools, 16 high schools, one charter school, one special education center, one adult education center and one performance learning center. Many of its schools are STEM certified.
